Accumulating money was the first challenge. Turning what you've accumulated into a retirement strategy that works is a different challenge.
Most people save faithfully and still carry a quiet anxiety that the numbers should have produced more.

When significant market losses occur near the start of retirement, the effect can be especially damaging. Withdrawals from a declining portfolio may lock in losses early, and even a later market recovery may not fully restore the income the portfolio was originally expected to produce. This is known as sequence-of-returns risk.

Contributions and investment growth inside many traditional retirement accounts generally have not yet been subject to income tax. Distributions are generally taxable as ordinary income under current law, and future tax rates are uncertain. This creates an important question: how much of the retirement balance you see today will ultimately be available for you to spend?

Seemingly small recurring fees can compound into a substantial difference over a long retirement. For example, a hypothetical portfolio of $500,000 earning 6% annually with a 1% fee versus a 2% fee would differ by roughly $230,000 over 25 years, before taxes. This is an illustrative example only and does not represent actual returns.

A retirement income strategy built to last 20 or 25 years may fall short if you or your spouse live into your 90s or beyond. The risk is that retirement assets or income strategies fail to support a lifespan longer than the plan anticipated.

Inflation gradually reduces the purchasing power of a fixed income. For example, at a hypothetical 3% annual inflation rate, $5,000 of monthly income today would have the purchasing power of approximately $2,600 per month in 25 years. This is an illustrative example only and does not represent actual inflation rates.
